Joey Bates '21, '23G enters his third year as an assistant coach with the John Carroll Football program in the 2023-24 academic year. He coaches the defensive backs and the special teams.
Bates previously served as a graduate assistant for the Blue Streaks from 2021-23.
Bates played three years at defensive back for the Blue Streaks, as he started at JCU, transferred to Ohio State for one semester, then return to John Carroll.
In spring of 2021, the Kirtland native tabbed 4 tackles and 1 pass breakup. In 2019, Bates registered 39 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, 2 interceptions, and 4 pass breakups. In 2018, Bates played in 8 games, tallying 18 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Bates graduated from John Carroll in May 2021 with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Studies. In 2023, Bates acquired his Master's of Education from JCU.
