About this speaker
Joe Matheson, who was named the Falcon’s Offensive Coordinator in the spring of 2020, completed his third season with the Falcons in 2021. He also coaches the wide receivers.
In 2021, Matheson led the UWRF offense to a record-breaking season, capped off by a victory over WashU in the inaugural Isthmus Bowl while the team finished 9-2 overall, the most wins at UWRF since 1996. Under Matheson, five Falcon offensive players garnered All-WIAC recognition, including AFCA First Team All-America honors for tight end Ben Beise, as he became the first AFCA First Team All-American at UWRF since 1999. Matheson and the Falcon offense were the top scoring and rushing offense in the WIAC and surpassed a program record with 477 total points scored, breaking the previous record of 344 set in 1989 and 1985. He was named the Hansen Ratings Region 6 Offensive Coordinator of the Year.
In his short tenure with the Falcons, Matheson has produced receivers that have their names all over the Falcon Record Books. In just three seasons, he has already coached three wide receivers to All-WIAC honors, including standout NFL Prospect, Alex Herink who was named First Team All-Conference in 2019. Matheson’s wide receivers were one of the main driving forces behind a 2019 season that was one of the most prolific offensive season in school history with new all-time marks for Total Offense (4,407), Pass Offense (3,252), and First Downs (227) in a season.
Before arriving in River Falls, Matheson worked at Southwest Minnesota State from 2016-2017. In Marshall, Minn., Matheson coached the tight ends, including an All-NSIC performer, as a part of their spread tempo system.
Matheson also served as an offensive student assistant at the University of Minnesota from 2012-2016 under Coach Jerry Kill. During that time period, the program progressed from three wins in 2011 to four straight bowl appearances.
Matheson earned an undergraduate Marketing degree from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and an MBA from Southwest Minnesota State University.
